Just purchased a Black Walnut starter. I'm completely new at Bonsai. I read that the leaves are hard to get small,It's seems I made a poor choice. Help.... MALIKA

Hi Malika

Contrary to what you've heard, it is EASY to dwarf the foliage of trees. all you have to do is prune your tree regularly. To learn how to do this refer to our species guides. A walnut will react similarly to a maple, so check our maple guides!

walnut bonsai NEW
by: George

l have read a bunch of comments made by various people about walnut bonsai....l have one on the go right now, l dug it up along some railway tracks not to far from where l live, 2 years ago. lt is doing very well and it is around 5-8 years old from what l could see by the growth rings when l chopped it down.l have around 25-30 bonsais on the go in various stages. My walnut just sent a beautiful sprout from close to the bottom of the trunk, it came quite unexpectedly, because l planted the walnut in my garden to see if it would grow, and l didn't want to speed to much time on it because l thought it died when l checked on it last fall. l pulled it out of the garden and was about to chuck it in the garbage, but when l cleaned all the dirt from around the base of the tree, l saw a beautiful "ring" of green, at the base of the tree. So l planted it on a slant in a pot l made from an old whiskey jug that l sliced in half and it is well on the way to becoming a nice tree. l have 1 nice branch on the go with the most beautiful tiny leaves, and l shape the branches when they are still "green", and they shape quite nice, but you have to be very careful when doing this so you don't snap the branch, as has happened to me with my sweetheart rose years ago, until l learned a trick to doing this, and now l manipulate the branches a little each day until they harden off.If anyone wants to see my walnut bonsai, email me at krazygeo123@hotmail.com and l will send you a picture....
