Bonsai Tree faqs
How do i choose a bonsai tree?
You should choose a bonsai tree based on your lifestyle and knowledge of bonsai/gardening. Varying bonsai trees require different growing conditions in order to flourish. If you live in a New York apartment, the choice of bonsai will differ compared to someone who lives on a South African farm!
If you are a complete novice with no gardening experience, you should stick to a beginner bonsai tree. If you are really struggling, fill out our online questionnaire here. Come back to our bonsai tree faqs though! There may be information you need here!
How do I buy a bonsai tree?
Buying a bonsai tree is very simple! No matter where you live, well, this is true for about 95% of you, there will be a garden shop/nursery nearby. Check your local area for listings and if you're lucky, there may even be a Bonsai nursery! If there is, then bingo! If not, you will be able to buy seedlings of established plants that you can bonsai yourself! Our 'how to' guides will help you with that!
Alternatively, visit our sales page and check out an extensive range!
How do I know what growing conditions my bonsai requires?
Simple! To start with, our site, other than this bonsai tree faqs page!, has an extensive list of the best species of bonsai, from Maples to Junipers to Serissas..... All the information you need on soil, lighting, watering etc is all there!
As a rule of thumb though, never over-water, never dehydrate, never leave your tree out in extreme weather (heat or cold) and watch for pests/disease!
I want to grow a bonsai indoors. Can I do this?
This question is a little tricky..... Glad you used this bonsai tree faqs page to bring it up! There are species of bonsai that can be grown indoors, such as the Ficus or Schefflera, however, all trees will be better grown outdoors where there is ample light. Some species will grow indoors, but most outdoor species (most bonsai) will not.
What tools do I need to start the art of bonsai?
Generally, most bonsai enthusiasts will use a pair of scissors, bonsai wire, pruning shears, branch cutters, snips & pliers (for the wire). Obviously the tools you have will be dictated by your level of bonsai knowledge, but check out our tools page, and also our sales page!
My tree looks sick, the leaves are yellow/brown. What is wrong and what do I do?
This is perhaps the most common bonsai question and the answer is usually simple. Two words - light and water!
If your leaves are yellowy/brown this would generally suggest drought or shade. If your tree is too thirsty and doesn't have enough water, leaves will wilt and turn yellow/brown. Too much shade will see the leaves turn yellow due to the process of photosynthesis being hindered.
In these situations, provide ample water and light and nurse your tree back to good health (if it's not already too late). Do not fertilise, as this will make your tree thirstier!
Also, bear in mind that depending on the tree, Autumn brings change of colour. If the tree is an indoor species, be sure it is not under an air conditioner, or near any harmful chemicals!

What kind of fertilizer should I feed my bonsai?
The simplest answer here is.......... osmocote. Obviously there are many types, and you can spend endless hours in a laboratory mixing different types and ratings, but simply put, osmocote will do the trick! There are exceptions however, so be sure to check our fertilizer pages for more info! Check back here at bonsai tree faqs though!
How do i best display my bonsai, particularly if I have started a collection?
Ok, sounds like you need to start a bonsai garden! Set your yard up to display your bonsai proudly, showing the best angles etc! Our guide will show you how!
