What bonsai is this?

by Adele Sophie
(Manchester, UK)

Hello there,
I recently got my first ever bonsai, and the small card that came with it said it was a Ligustrum, however the leaves on my bonsai are thin and serrated and I think it looks more like a Zelkova but I'm not sure, so I'm thinking maybe someone mixed the cards up,
Could you please give me your thoughts on what type you think it is?
Thanks!

Hi Adele!

Yep, I think you're on the money! Without holding the tree in my hand it's hard to tell exactly which species of elm this tree is, but it definitely could be a Zelkova. Just follow the same care instructions as you would for a Chinese Elm (species section on our site) and the tree will be fine!

Thanks for stopping by!
